Projects in the Software Engineering & Visualisation Group

The Software Engineering & Visualisation Group (SEVG) covers a wide range of research topics which have a common theme of understanding complexity. Further information about the group is available at http://www.cosc. canterbury.ac.nz/research/RG/svg. Software systems are too large and complex to be able to be understood in complete detail by individual developers. Consequently, we need abstract...

Pbl Applied to Software Engineering Group Projects

This paper describes the application of Problem-based learning (PBL) to the design and implementation of an Ecommerce web site by small groups of software engineering students. This work is part of a real-world software engineering course, taught to pre-internship students. The use of PBL has gained significant interest since its inception in the late 1950’s, and its later adaptation to small t...

Software engineering meets scientific computing: group projects in CSE education

We present experiences with an annual group project with a strong software engineering touch, recently established in the curriculum of the BGCE honours program, and its impact on the CSE education. The participating students organize themselves as a small software company and work on a topic provided by a specific customer of the project. For example, this year’s project aims to develop a flex...

Motivating Students in Software Engineering Group Projects: an Experience Report

Motivating students to engage with their subject is an ongoing challenge in higher education, particularly in science and engineering. This paper presents experiences gained in introducing robotics as a means to increase engagement with a second-year undergraduate software-engineering group-project module forming part of a computer science degree programme. Robotics is well-established as an ef...
